Botox

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. When used clinically in small, controlled doses, Botox can temporarily lower muscle activity by blocking nerve signals, and so it is used to treat spasticity, pain from migraines, and many other medical conditions. It is also used cosmetically to smooth out wrinkles.

Procedure: Botox

The Botox treatment is a series of quick and simple injections, with each session only lasting 10-15 minutes. For chronic migraines, the doctor injects Botox with a fine needle targeting the areas of migraine pain. This process involves several areas including the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck, and shoulders. The injections are subcutaneous, just under the skin.

In the case of treating spasticity (increased muscle contractions from damage and irregular muscle stiffness), the injections are longer (30-45 minutes) and are given intramuscularly. Sometimes ultrasound is used to assist with placing the needle on the muscle.

Post-operative Care for Botox

The injections are usually well-tolerated by patients; most will not notice any change for a few days or even weeks after the treatment. Improvements should be noticeable once the effects take hold, and last approximately 2-3 months. The patient should observe if any side effects like pain, bleeding at the injection sites, or flu-like symptoms appear. Some patients also experience neck pain and stiffness right after the session, but they should disappear over time. Following the treatment, healthcare providers often recommend physical or occupational therapy to enhance the benefits of the Botox treatment.
