Hip Injection

A hip injection is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat hip pain. This technique involves the injection of medication directly into the hip joint or surrounding structures to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and enhance mobility. Hip pain can originate from several sources within and around the hip joint. Common conditions include: 
Hip Pain

Osteoarthritis: A degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of cartilage, leading to pain and stiffness.

Trochanteric Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that reduces friction between bones and soft tissues.

Labral Tears: Damage to the labrum, the cartilage that cushions the hip joint.

Tendinitis: Inflammation of tendons around the hip joint.

Procedure: Hip Injection

The procedure can help differentiate between various sources of hip pain and is often used to provide temporary or long-term relief for conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis.

The patient is positioned comfortably, and the hip area is cleaned and sterilized to prevent infection. A local anesthetic may be administered to numb the injection site and minimize discomfort. Using imaging guidance (such as fluoroscopy or ultrasound), a needle is carefully inserted into the hip joint or surrounding area. A combination of corticosteroids (to reduce inflammation) and/or anesthetics (to block pain) is then injected. After the injection, the needle is withdrawn, and a bandage may be applied.

Post-operative Care for Hip Injection:

Patients may experience immediate relief or slight discomfort. It’s common to feel some soreness at the injection site. Patients are usually advised to avoid strenuous activities for 24-48 hours post-injection to allow the medication to take effect. Pain relief can vary, and follow-up appointments may be necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of the injection and plan further treatment if needed.
