What is the mild® Procedure for Spinal Stenosis?

The mild® procedure is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis, a condition characterized by narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots. Lumbar spinal stenosis results from the gradual narrowing of the spinal canal, often due to degenerative changes in the spine. These changes can include thickening of ligaments, formation of bone spurs, and enlargement of facet joints, collectively reducing the space available for the spinal cord and nerves. As a result, there is compression of neural structures, leading to symptoms of neurogenic claudication and radiculopathy, which cause pain and reduced function. The mild® procedure aims to remove excess ligament tissue surrounding the spinal canal, reducing compression and improving symptoms

Procedure: Mild® Procedure for Spinal Stenosis

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to numb the treatment area and ensure patient comfort. Using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, a small incision is made in the back, and a specialized device is inserted into the affected spinal segment. The device is used to remove excess ligament tissue (ligamentum flavum) that is compressing the spinal canal, without the need for extensive bone or tissue removal. Imaging is used to confirm spinal decompression.  The device is removed, and then a small bandage is placed over the entry site.

Post-operative Care for the mild® Procedure:

Patients often experience immediate relief from symptoms, with continued improvement in pain and mobility over the following weeks. Physical therapy may be recommended to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine and improve overall spinal health. Recovery is generally rapid, with most patients able to resume normal activities within a few days to weeks.
